The power of processors integrated in modern TV sets is constantly growing, not just in terms of operating clock which is in GHz range, but also in number of processor cores which is 2 today, and soon expected to be 4 or 8.

TV sets are becoming programmable devices, which raises a question about the framework in which applications can be accessed and executed. Android Operating System imposes as a natural framework, since its widely accepted by consumer electronics vendors, and already running on mobile devices and tablets.

What Android is missing today is an interface with DTV centric device, in the way it has already incorporated GSM modem, GPRS, gyro and other mobile centric devices.

Android4TV is a default aplication for Digital TV based on Android.  It provides:

  • natural integration of DTV into Android user space
  • placeholder for digital MW(DVB or ATSC)
  • API for TV centric applications
